Subject Matter Experts Make Thousands Online

There are many subject matter experts making thousands online each year, but what exactly is a subject matter expert and how are they making thousands online?

A subject matter expert has the ability to provide knowledge and expertise in a specific area or field.  This knowledge may come from academic learning or research, but it may also come from years of on the job experience.  In many cases is comes from mastery through practice and love from a hobby.  Just look at Teresa Greenway.  It’s been reported that she has made over $31K in just 9 months as an expert in making Sourdough. I too have made a sizable sum as an expert in Excel and Bookkeeping.

How to become an Online Subject Matter Expert

The first thing you must do is become known as a subject matter expert.  The go to person in your field.  If you want to make money online, then you that’s where you need to build your credibility.  There is no point in being the subject matter expert in the office and no one online knowing who you are or what you do!

To achieve this you need to put out good quality content on a regular basis.  This can be done though blogs, videos and social media.  Keep focused on your topic, connect with others and collaborate with other experts in your field. Educate others by answering questions in discussion groups, communities and sites like Quora. By doing this you are sharing your expertise for free, and will soon see a following growing and then referrals will come in.

How do subject matter experts make thousands online

There are a number of ways that subject matter experts are cashing in online.  Currently, the most popular ways are writing E-Books, Producing online course or teaching live online sessions.

Before you write an E-Book or begin to write a course or training session you must establish who your customer will be. Then you can establish the needs of your customer. When I started to teach online, I identified my customers as Qualified Accountants in Ireland that require continued professional educational credits.  Knowing who my target customer were enabled me to write a ten-hour Excel course with examples and activities that accountants could relate to. I produced real accounting time-saving tips and solved spreadsheet problems I knew accountants faced on a daily basis.

When I started to make money online as a subject matter expert, I wish I knew then what I know now. Creating and delivering online courses requires more than being a subject matter expert.  So my advice to those that are just starting out – Learn from others that have walked the path. Take a few courses on writing and publishing E-Books and take a few courses on course creation.  I can promise you that this time spent learning, will save you hours and hours in the end.

I am always learning.  I learn about instructional design, video production, writing skills, marketing skills, content creation. Anything that can help me improve my knowledge in the filed and grow my business  As a qualified accountant and Excel expert, I still learn more about accounting and excel because times change and I need to stay up to date if I want to uphold my status as a subject matter expert.

  1. Interesting article. At work, with teams i am interacting with, i am identified as a subject matter expert, due to what you mentioned: knowledge, expertise and years of experience. i would like to bring this to another level, outside my organization. i have been exploring online training as an option but time is a factor that plays against me. so writing an e-book for now, even though its a great idea, would not be a good solution for myself. I think i would be comfortable in facilitating a QA session. Would a blog be a good solution? do you have other suggestions? thank you and keep up the good work!

    • Patrick, thank you for your comments. Writing EBooks and online courses do take time, but I would suggest that to start with, blog and grow your following. that way, when you do have time, you will have a following and market to sell to.
